How the Guides Work

Each guide shows the main ways a product is produced so you can see what’s behind the label. Systems are organized from more open, higher-quality production to more confined, lower-quality production.

The differences usually come down to a few things:

  • how the animal is raised or how the material is sourced

  • what it’s fed or made with

  • how it’s processed

  • how transparent the labeling is

Labels don’t tell the full story. The same term can mean very different things depending on the farm, company, or region. These guides are built to give you a clear, practical way to compare options and decide what to buy.
